L is now 5 months old and has always point blank refused rice cereal and after tasting it I don't blame her. Its sooo bland, just not nice at all. So far she loves butternut, sweet potato, apple, pawpaw, pear, and banana. Carrots, baby marrow, green beans and peas are acceptable if mixed with butternut or sweet potato. Avocados are a definite no no. Starting nectarines and peaches tomorrow. I've managed to sneak a bit of rice cereal in with other foods, just too add a grain to the menu. So far she's gaining weight well and loves eating. She opens her mouth for veggies but with fruit she opens so wide I can see her tonsils and moans if I don't shovel it in fast enough.
I steam her fruit and veggies, and puree and freeze them in mumi and bubi trays. I'm happy that she prefers veggies and fruit to cereal as they're healthy and she's getting additional nutrients and vitamins. The info I've read says rice cereal is just empty calories with no nutritional benefit at all. I'm still breastfeeding her 4 times a day (one expressed) and she gets one bottle of formula a day.
There's a really helpful website with recipes and hints for baby food that I've been looking at. http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/
So far she's had no adverse reactions to any food so all good in the solids department.
